Professor of Anaesthesiology

Biography

Chula Goonasekera was the Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka from 2002 to 2013 and a founder member and twice the President of the Sri Lanka Society of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine.

His passion and interest in developing critical care and emergency medicine helped in the building of the much needed platform for Sri Lankan medicine to move forward towards the 21st century. He promoted the establishment of this together with several likeminded colleagues from many specialties. His efforts led to congregating multiple specialty professionals for a common cause and ultimately to the formation of the first board of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine in Sri Lanka in 2008. This ensured the provision of training structures for both specialties.

His close links with Shane Curran and the Australian College of Emergency Medicine has helped Sri Lanka to progress unhindered amidst many obstacles and paved the way for the first batch of Sri Lankan trained Emergency Physicians to qualify in 2016.

He is currently a Consultant Paediatric Anesthetist with an academic interest in pediatric critical care at the Kings College Hospital, London. He maintains a keen interest in Sri Lanka’s critical care and emergency medicine developments.
